Huge!
But I grew up at the coast – Port Elizabeth where we had far bigger ones.
The one day my Dad was cutting the hedge while I was holding the ladder. One ran up his arm, underneath his shirt and out the other side. He did not even react.
When I screamed, he told me not to worry. He told me that those small spiders are more dangerous and that one bit him many years ago.
I remember that in my consulting work today. Often it is not the big hazards or crises that are dangerous, it’s thos esmall combustible ones that is scary!
If I saw a spider like that anywhere near my house…I’d move. Holy crap!
I agree with Deon, as an ex- ‘Baainaar’ i’ve seen quite a few big ones in my day as well, having lived right next to the bush! No amount of fencing be it mesh or walled is gonna stop it from getting to a nice moist, shaded area in your yard!
We later grew rather adapt at catching them in a jar and taking it to school or my dad to his work although he himself was &#!+ scared of it!
Catching them is quite simple really….get a big enough jar (see through is always best) or even a 2L ice cream bucket; a rigid piece of cardboard or paper and a quick hand. Get the jar as close as possible (when the spider is on a flat surface of course) …..flip it over the spider….and slide the cardboard underneath. Take care not to create ANY gaps at all….and last thing to do is to wait until it’s at the bottom and QUICKLY put on the proper lid..punch a few holes …and Voila!!!!
Oh i’m a Capey now…going on 15 Years…i think!!
