27dinners.com Gets A New Look (And Attitude)

Posted in Entrepreneurship, South Africa, Web 2.0 and Social Media

27dinner binary logoIt was inevitable that the 27dinner movement would eventually outgrow it’s PBwiki-hosted home in time.  The movement has grown substantially and truly exciting things are coming up.  The new site is up at 27dinner.com.

I’d like to humbly request that you understand that the new site is (and will continue to be) a work in progress, it’s not meant to be perfect this first time around so your feedback and insight would be greatly appreciated.

Nothing changes about 27 - you still get to attend for free and we’re going to try ensure that the content is not only up to standard with some of what you’ve seen before, but even better so.  We’ve also decided to respond to the numerous enquiries we’ve had from companies wanting to get involved in the form of sponsorships, etc. in such a way that it doesn’t detract from the ethos and culture of the movement.  In other words, we’ll only allow companies to get involved if it adds to your experience and pumps energy and value back into the community.

So check it out, let us know what works and what doesn’t, and what needs to change.  And thanks especially for you continued support of the dinners countrywide.

Mike you and Dave Duarte are both invited to the next 27Dinner in Port Elizabeth. There is some good momentum building this side of the world with bloggers like Yellow Llama and MyPE ranking well on Amatomu.

Some people in the local media like The Herald and Weekend Post, are very interested in launching blogs.

Very very awesome for it to get its very own home; it truly is an incredible project. I cannot tell you what a remarkable impression it had on me.

    Keep up the awesome work!

This past Monday I was called a GEEK for the first time in my life. FINALLY … after two and a half years in the IT game.

I guess that means I officially qualify for a 27Dinner (”limited to 100 geeks”)

Next JHB Dinner date and venue?

This is a massive improvement over the old wiki site.

Now what you need is some WordPress luminary to give a talk. Apart from Matt Mullenweg, I think you should consider inviting Donncha O Caoimh out to South Africa.

Once you have such a speaker lined up, be sure to tip off some (tech) journalists and get them to attend the event so they can report on it.

We’re very sorry to see you leave PBwiki but are happy to see your movement succeeding.

As the founder of PBwiki, can I ask how we could do a better job at helping host groups like yours and give you the level of customization, performance, and service you’d like?

    Hey David

Right up front, PBWiki is one of the most useful platforms we’ve ever, well, used. The problem we faced was that it started to suffer from (probably as a result of it’s popularity) a lot of spam abuse. The service we recieved from your team has always been exceptional, so that wasn’t an issue, I just think the functionality we wanted to incorporate in http://www.27dinner.com (check it out now if you like) lent itself more to a CMS than a wiki.

    That was our only motivation.
