South African Blog Awards 2008
I flew down to Cape Town yesterday to attend the South African Blog Awards.
The event was held at the UCT Tennis Club and was very well attended by folks from all walks of life. Huge congrats go to Jon Cherry and his team for organising the event out of the goodness of his heart (all that where there would have noted that Jon never once promoted Cherryflava or Cherrypicka).
A huge thank you goes to my clients, colleagues and friends at Microsoft and Dell for coming to the party big time with some amazing prizes - Microsoft sponsored an Xbox for blog of the year and Dell sponsored four 20″ LCD monitors for four other categories. Cerebra also sponsored a prize for best undiscovered blog - I need to get an iPod Nano to Living Life Breathlessly (if anyone knows how I can get in touch with him / her / it).
All the winners and runners up can be viewed here. Notable mentions must go to Matthew Buckland for scooping the Best Business blog award and for Thought Leader’s dominance in the Political and Best Blog of the year categories. Amatomu also grabbed the best site promoting blogging (and deservedly so) - congrats to Vince.
Some people will contest certain categories won by big media entities (East Coast Radio and Mail & Guardian specifically) who are enjoying huge popularity in the social media space but others (and I’m from this school of thought) think it brilliant for blogging in general. Anyone who thinks otherwise is short-sighted and or has blog envy. As Andrew from Ideate said to me last night, this event is about promoting blogging, not bloggers.
It would have been nice to have seen some representation from East Coast, Keo and the like. I know Mail & Guardian couldn’t make it although Vince and Matt really wanted to be there.
One question though… which one of the Thought Leader bloggers gets the Xbox?

Haha thanks Mike. Yeah we would have love to have been there. We made last year’s, but just couldnt do this years. Next time
thanks for the mention and we are chuffed with the awards.
The Xbox will be broken up into a 150 parts and distributed to everyone.
