MTN, Jupiter Drawing Room And YouTube
What are you all squealing about? What is so terrible about MTN and Jupiter drawing from public domain user-generated content and simply producing slicker or better (debatable) versions thereof?
Doesn’t the entire blogosphere work that way? Somebody comes up with something cool - an idea, notion, concept, buzzword - and then everyone piles in adding their 2c worth. You could argue that due attribution takes place via links and trackbacks online, but sometimes the originators of ideas get lost in the noise and sheer volume online too. Take the 27 Dinners for example - they’re growing at such a rate there are people that have no idea that I, let alone Cerebra, have anything to do with them. In fact someone was kind enough to send me an invitation to the next Jozi wone the other day encouraging me to be a part of it ![]()
So I say congrats to MTN and Jupiter - looks like you two just discovered the elusive business model for YouTube - unashamed copying!!!

Mike there’s a big difference between the business world - MTN and Jupiter Drawing Room - and the blogosphere. Money!
And if I’m not mistaken, Jupiter pride themselves on being one of the top creative agencies in the country?
I know everyone says that almost nothing is entirely original. But to blatantly copy stuff - then rationalize it and not give any credit or money to the people who proved that original ideas ARE possible is not right.
No matter how entertaining the ads are.
Mike, the other issue here is that Jupiter didn’t copy - they used the videos verbatim. Maybe money exchanged hands I have no idea and that’s why I wanted clarity.
All I know is that it would have been better had they got African’s to create some content instead of picking the top YouTube videos but that’s just me.
The difference is that the blog world credits the original source and doesn’t try pass un-original content as their own.
I dunno, i think the real culprits here are the ‘creatives’ at Jupiter. They’ve managed to do some blatant copying and earned quite a buck in the process. If I were them I’d chalk these ads up to ‘we had nothing else’ instead of ‘we’re so frikkin creative and brilliant’
I find it funny that nobody from that camp have commented on this? They can’t tell me they haven’t found these posts in the blogosphere. They found youtube afterall…
I agree with Jason the problem is that no credit is given to the real creators, and the movies really are taken verbatim from Youtube. Anybody could grab a .flv file and put Vodacom’s tag on it.. it would be better than that damn meerkat.
Here I am searching for creative commons music to use in anything public I do, and these guys don’t give a damn. Theres a question for you. On Youtube, since it isn’t for commercial use, you can use any artists music. Although sometimes the tube catches you out and won’t let you submit (it does have plagiarism filters.) But then you take that video and put it on TV, what about the artist who made the backing music?
Here’s the thing that gets me. If you are an artist or performer you know the hours you invest into creating something amazing like this video. It took MTN or Jupiter about what 5 minutes to download the video and then edit the mtn scam the future logo at the end of it?
MTN in my opinion just lost every artists business forever, I don’t care if they are the last network provider company on earth I’d rather send smoke signals.
I can only try and communicate this to other by saying this, imagine you worked a whole month and someone else gets your paycheck? How would you feel ? In this case MTN obviously paid Jupiter to make an add, Jupiter said heck wait, download a video slap some mtn logos on and viola easy money.
