Bloglines Blues

Decided to try catch up on some RSS feeds this morning, seeing as I’ve been missing out on all the good news lately, and it appears Bloglines has deleted all my feeds. They’re just not there. What a pain.

I guess it’ll give me an opportunity to finally switch to Google Reader, which I’ve been threatening to do for some time now, and clean up the ol’ feed list (again). Maybe not such a bad thing after all.

Update:

Thanks to all of you for your comments and suggestions – I had a response from Ben of Ask.com who helped resurrect my feeds. Out of respect for his great service (and the fact that I really have no qualms with Bloglines), I’ll stick with them.

Ben – please check out some of these comments – Bloglines is notorious for being slow on adding new developments to the site, some useful tips for added value features described below…

I changed over from Bloglines to Google reader earlier this year, and honestly can say, I don’t miss it at all. Google has some better functions, and from today supports embedded video :)

What features does Google Reader have, that are “Special”
    I have never used it.

    I am using Google.com/ig
It lets you add feeds, and widgets, like weather, calenders, clocks, split by tabs.
Nice home page, with a Google search on top…

Since I am only using it for feeds, I might have a look at Google Reader, if I like it, I’ll use that as my home page.

Now that u have that sexy little black mac, I’d recommend that u give NetNewsWire a try.

Guys switch to Netvibes.com. You wont be sorry!

On Mac, little comes close to NetNewsWire (like Dave says). For a free solution, I use Flock (http://www.flock.com) – Firefox for bloggers, flickr-ers, delicious-ers.

I’m currently using RSS Bandit and I haven’t looked back yet. Switched (used loosely) from Bloglines ages ago.

Obviously you may want to do a backup occasionally, but it’s great that you can refer to posts without having to go online first.

    My 10 cents

Eish. Too much. I will try that out dudes, otherwise maybe Thunderbird, and just keep the feeds on my local machine.

As Marc mentioned GReader supports embedded video, YouTube and the like, which RSS Bandit and Bloglines don’t.

Netvibes.com and PageFlakes.com have there advantages but are only good for a home page to show a list of unread post titles and thats it – which is great for del.icio.us and digg feeds – just my 6 cents.

Mike, if you’re planning to go that route, just have a look at my RSS thing on Flock. Hopefully you’ll like it…

Okay, I’m sorry for commenting so much on this post, Mike…

I just read a old post of yours why you can’t leave Bloglines for Google Reader due to the fact that your blogroll is feeded by bloglines and Google don’t do the same. I had a look and it seems that now you can.

So if you still need to / want to do that, you can check out :

I’m looking at doing this for myself, so if you need help, shout!

    Hi Mike,

I’m an engineer with Bloglines. I’d sad to hear you’re having problems with the service, though I may be able to offer some help. Fire me an email and I can try to give you hand. Short term, try go to http://www.bloglines.com/myblogs_subs and hit the refresh button while holding down shift. That should clear the cache and bring back your feed list.

    Thanks,

    Ben Lowery

Stii – Find it pretty handy for sharing links Miguel & I share some of our feeds in the sidebar of the front page of our blog. Do you mind sharing the link to your GReader shared items? It’s always good to know what other AddiCT(s); are reading. Hmm reminds me, time to update the blogroll…

Mike – next time you’re in town, speak to the maven in our studio and he will show you how to use Flock. The man knows what he’s talking about…
