SA Banks Just Don’t Get It

There’s a bit of buzz in the South African blogosphere around two posts, Cherryflava’s “We’re a bank, give us money to make ads” and Goozeberry’s “The Relevance of Web 2.0 Debated? Hmmm…“, both of which allude to the ever-increasing delusion of our four major banks.

It seems the consensus is that those companies who preach most about how they can help us by making things work together, today and tomorrow, with inspiration, motivation and involvement, actually couldn’t care less or even worse, don’t know any better.

As Jon Cherry so aptly puts it:

It would be the most amazing, remarkable, outstanding business strategy of 2007, if just one of the big four banks had to declare ‘no advertising’ for the year ahead – and instead, dedicate their resources to just ‘returning your phone calls’.

That’s it – just return a client’s call within a reasonable time. Now that’s something to crow about; and real differentiation.

Don’t hold your breath though, it’ll never happen – its too hard.

Its much easier to make a pointless, deceptive, BS advert and lie to people. Plus there’s no media commission in it.

And that’s from a guy who is usually quite PC :P
