Hiring a Blogger Means Hiring a Known Quantity
Rod Boothby recently quit his job at Ernst & Young USA to join an exciting new startup - all as a result (according to him) of the effort he’s put in to publishing one of the most well-respected resources on the application of social software in the enterprise available on the Web. Congrats to you Rod!
I have spoken to Rod a number of times on the phone - he deserves his success and I hope this ‘position’ will see some of his wisdom and good ideas come to fruition. He is one of those vary rare bloggers whose content you cannot afford to miss - especially if you have any interest in how blogs or wikis or any social medium for that matter can be used to improve the productivity of employees and or foster a culture of innovation in modern organisations. I often say in presentations on blogging that without a shadow of a doubt 99.9% of blog content is useless to company executives. However, that still leaves 0.01% of 60 million blogs to consider - Rod is one of the 0.01 percenters.
The lesson to be learned from Rod’s blog is that maintaining a valuable, insightful and informative blog could just mean securing your status as an equally valuable commodity - with an audience that matters. I get really encouraged by people who find time to maintain excellent blogs while in ‘corporate jobs’ - guys like Scott for example - because not only are they improving their ‘Google CV’ but they’re also speaking from a meaningful context - they’re not delirious like us virtual blokes :).
Blogs don’t lie - prospective recruiters can get a pretty good impression of someone’s value, or not, from their online musings. Is that scary or encouraging!?
