NYT Saves Face(book) by Sharing the News(vine). Digg it?
Ok, it’s a terrible post title. I’m known for other gifts.
TechCrunch and Business2.0 report that the New York Times has opened up it’s content to social media practitioners (yes, you!) with added ’share’ features and functionality at the bottom of selected articles.
From TechCrunch:
Although you could always manually add The Times stories to news sharing sites such as Digg and Newsvine before, the capability to do it directly from the story means that The Times is paying attention to where its stories are shared, who reads them, and, more importantly, what they are saying about them. Currently, The Times offers limited ability to comment on its stories. The world of readers’ comments can be brutal (believe me, I know this first hand), and by dealing directly with the sites that facilitate this, The Times exposes itself to far more reader interaction than they have ever had before.
Business2.0:
Every major publisher should be doing this. Digg, Newsvine, and blogs are not necessarily competitors. They are traffic generators.
As an aside, from the NYT – 2006, Brought to You by You.

Big up to Mail & Gaurdian, the local legends. Reading their feeds on MXit in the wee hours makes me want to go out and buy a paper, ok maybe not buy a paper but read the full stories on their website (social bookmark buttons) When are they going to add muti.co.za to their list?
