Is Unilever at it Again?
Not all that long ago I was musing about the Stork Blogging Ad on TV, and now I hear from Kwame Mdaka that there is a viral campaign on the loose linked to another Unilever brand - this time Lipton Ice Tea.
Apparently if you buy 20 x 1.5 liter bottles of Lipton Ice Tea (about R 180) you get a free one-way !!! RETURN !!! ticket to Cape Town from 1Time airlines!
Strangely (or sadly), same as the blogging ad on TV, I can find nothing on the Web to confirm or deny this offer / campaign / joke. Kwame is a trusted friend, so I know he’s not messing with me. He and two mates cleared Pick ‘n Pay Craighall’s entire stock of Lipton and collected their tickets!
Anyone know anything about it?
Update:
A comment from Anya, Marketing Manager of 1Time Airlines (kudos to you for your quick response!), explains that YES!, there is a campaign and the details are at www.liptonsummer.co.za.
Well done guys.

not sure if this would help, but often when i hear about offers that are too good to be true, i will check them out on http://www.snopes.com
saves me a lot of anxiety.

This promotion, if it exists, reminds me of the Threshers liquor discount viral promo that Hugh Macleod is currently blogging about at Gaping Void (http://gapingvoid.com). They can be incredibly powerful tools to increase product awareness for a relativley low cost.
Lucky Strike did a similar thing a few years ago with their parties for “people in the know” that featured international bands and free drinks. Ultimately I think that their campaign backfired and created resentment towards their brand when people found out that their favourite bands had just played in their city to a mix of advertising agency types and Simunye presnters.
Mike, if you do find out more about this Lipton promotion, please let me know more. Thanks
Hi Everyone.
I am the marketing manager of 1time Airline, and YES, Unilever isn’t “at it again”… they DO have a promo. Please check their Website on http://www.liptonsummer.co.za
Have a nice day now.

Woot Woot, they’re watching.
RE: The Lucky Strike campign, not only advertsing types & tv presenters were present
Guys this is for real, i feel like i created a monster, after buying 60 bottles of ice tea my friends spread the word faster than bird flu. my mother even got in on it and now we are sitting with 60 bottles of ice tea at home. Lipton was exteeme bright with this one. well done guys. just in case you want me to spread the word on other products gimme a shout…..0825148219
Thanks Mike and Kwame - you just saved me over R3 000 - managed to get my band (4 guys) return flights to Cape Town for under R800!
Rafiq - yeah I know that other people managed to get to the gigs - I saw the Violent Femmes, Bush, one hit wonders Wheatus and Cypress Hill at four amazingly produced gigs. My point was that my friends who could not get into those gigs developed a resentment towards the Lucky Strike brand
Just a quick addendum to the above post:
You still have to pay for airport taxes, which works out to R140 per return flight. This means that a return flight to Cape Town will cost about R340 - still amazing value considering that you can still get a return flight from from JHB to Cape Town during the December holidays, a flight that would normally cost in excess of R2000.00.
Throw in the fact that you also get 18 litres of Liptons Iced Tea and the whole deal is pretty sweet. Its a pity you can only get 1 ticket per person :).
