Geek is the New Black

Our inaugural Jozi Geek Dinner with wine kindly sponsored by the genius clan at Stormhoek was an enormous success – the first of many more I hope.

We had a great turnout (thanks to all of you who came), a nifty venue (thanks to Primi) and some really cool talks from friends, bloggers and of course marketing guru Seth Godin who generously gave of his time and energy to put together a customized message for us Jozi geeks and marketers. Watch this space as I’ll be posting the 3 minute riff for download soon.

I must also mention that Hugh MacLeod of the brilliant Gaping Void blog (and also Stormhoek’s blogging consultant) donated time to record a conversation with me earlier in the day which I promptly screwed up. We hoped to call Hugh from the venue live but unfortunately our connectivity wasn’t great. Sorry Hugh!

We had some inspiring talks from the likes of Graham Knox – wine expert and Stormhoek makulu, Max Kaizen – hunter of genius, Aiden Choles – storyteller extraordinaire and Christof Appel – goat lover and allround talented young bloke (just ask peas).

Thanks to Rich and the guys at Missing Link for the cool logo, Carl Spies for help organising and tech, Dericia for taking some pics for us (her photostream can be found here).

It’s good to be geek.

Updates:

Roger sums things up beautifully.
Mac-evangelist-in-arms Carl delivers on his genius (and has some awesome pics too).
Peas gives us a celebrity review.

    Hi Mike

Thank you for the dinner, we met very briefly.

I was talking to your brother, Dave. He asked if I could post a comment, so that you could put him on contact with me (Jonathan).

    Thanks a lot.

Thanks again for the dinner, really enjoyed it…

I’m bleak that I couldn’t make it to this installment of the Geek Dinner series! By all accounts I’ve heard that it was an epic event and I’m reaaaaallly looking forward to the next one in Joburg (or Durban perhaps?).

[...] It’s been two months since the inaugural Stormhoek Jozi Geek Dinner. One person who was meant to be there, but sadly could not make it owing to an unfortunate stomach bug, is Mike Scott. Mike and I had a brief email exchange before the event but at that time I’d been to busy and self-absorbed to visit his blog. I did so recently and am pounding my head against the wall for not finding it sooner… This lad is a genius! I’m loving his cartoons, his content and the general vibe on his site. [...]

[...] Last year I organised a geek dinner here in Jozi with Stormhoek and others. The geek dinner was a no agenda, no obligation opportunity for geeks to get together, but also for non-geeks to immerse themselves in all things geeky in a safe, welcoming environment. It was a huge success and I decided I wanted to carry it on this year. [...]
