BarCamp Johannesburg
Recently our Capetonian neighbours held BarCamp Cape Town, and by the sound of things it was a rip-roaring success (read Conrad‘s succint round-up and linkage here). Inspired in part by their efforts and the ever-nearing reality of BarCamp Earth (being held at the end of this month), a few of us Jo’burgers have clubbed together to organise BarCamp JOZI ’06! Rah rah!
BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering (or “unconference“) born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from attendees.
Registration, admission and participation will cost you zip, zero and absolutely nothing. Nifty!
BarCamp JOZI ’06 will be held at the Sci-Bono Center in Newtown on the 9 and 10 September.
An event like this doesn’t happen on its own – we need help with organising it, getting sponsorships, spreading the word, general dogsbody stuff and so on. There is no set or prescriptive topic list or speaking schedule, but are keen to follow the guidelines of tech, media and culture as integrated elements – and we’d love to hear about what you want to hear about!!!

BarCamp Cape Town ignited many a colab as I am sure you are aware. May the same happen in jozi. I so wana be there. We’re running an SEO experiment with the Quirk stars re: My chat at BarCamp CapeTown. barCamp jozi might be a great place to unveil the findings? What you guys think?

Bar Camp is WELL worth it and I am drooling over the line-up. Hope to see y’all there (TBC asap).
If anyone is hesitant about signing up; feeling daunted by the sheer magnitude of minds all melding in their geekness >> cast all fears to the wind! BarCamp is a gathering for anyone who gets excited about the future through the door that tech has cracked open for us.
…and maybe get a bit more insight into WHY the geek shall inherit the earth ;-)
