There is No Loyalty

Posted in Marketing, Advertising and Branding, Web 2.0 and Social Media

NetscapeJason Calcanis is a smart dude.  In his quest to make the new Netscape the ultimate Digg killer, he’s offered top Diggers, Newsvine users, Reddit dudes and others the opportunity to become professional social bookmarkers, at $1000 a month for their efforts.

And it’s working.

They’ve already hired 3 of the top 12 Diggers, the #1 Newsvine and Reddit dudes, and a bunch of others.  Read about it here.  Apparently, and surprisingly, the Digg community is behind those who have chosen to leave.  Odd.

Money makes even the Web 2.0 world go ’round.

Web 2.0 has always been about money, hasn’t it? All this stuff about free love and self-expression only ever applied to the content providers, not the owners of these ventures. That content providers (diggers, youtubers, flickers) are now moving towards potentially paid-for models (Netscape, Revver, Scoopd) is a sign of maturity in the overall web 2.0 movement, I think.
