ICASA hearing - will it make a difference?

Posted in Random Thoughts

http://www.esms.co.za/images/Telkom-logo-1.jpgI’m a registered user at MyADSL - a community that according to the About page, was formed in 2003 to serve the South African broadband and IT community - “It provides visitors with up-to-date coverage of local and International IT and Internet related news, and gives them a place to give their views and share information on these issues.

The MyADSL forums have become the premier place to discuss broadband and technology related issues. It is the best resource for any broadband related question and there are many representatives from broadband service providers that will gladly answer your questions.”

I recently received an email from MyADSL with the following message:

“The ICASA ADSL Hearings take place on the 24th and 25th of May, and as usual MyADSL will be there to give consumers a voice. Can you please give your views on the ADSL landscape in South Africa and possible solutions to the problems here”

With a link to the page on the MyADSL forums dedicated to the ICASA hearings - you can see it here.

I’m astounded that MyADSL and it’s members are still as committed to the cause as they clearly are. Telkom frustrated me to the point of exhaustion long ago. And I’m seriously hoping that something comes of these hearings, but simultaneously skeptical of any really effective changes in our telecoms landscape.

I wish them the best of luck and look forward to seeing what the outcomes of this series of hearings is. May the force be with you, broadband brethren.
